DDoS Scrubbing – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
DDoS scrubbing is used to mitigate distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which aim to cause delays and outages of websites and IT infrastructures via artificial requests. With DDoS scrubbing, the data traffic is redirected to a DDoS scrubbing center in the event of an attack. There, the attack traffic is filtered out and the clean traffic is forwarded to the target server. The redirection to the scrubbing center is usually carried out via DNS for individual services or via BGP for entire IP address ranges.
In the event of an attack, the entire incoming data traffic of a web server can be manually or automatically redirected to a DDoS scrubbing center. In the DDoS scrubbing center, the traffic passes through several filter layers. Malicious traffic is automatically discarded and the remaining clean traffic is forwarded to the origin server via a previously agreed connection. Myra offers direct connections, VLAN connections and GRE tunnels for traffic forwarding.
A DDoS scrubbing service identifies malicious traffic streams and filters them out to prevent an overload on the origin servers and free up capacity for valid user traffic. Modern protection systems automatically initiate mitigation within a few seconds as soon as the previously defined threshold values (bandwidth, packet rate) are exceeded. In the event of an attack, powerful DDoS scrubbing centers discard the requests, which are usually generated by botnets.
