With annual sales of around 2.1 billion euros, more than 26,000 employees and over 3,800 stores in eleven European countries, KiK is Germany's largest textile discounter. Since 2013, the company, which is part of the Tengelmann Group, has also operated its own online stores, which have become even more important during the coronavirus pandemic. During the lockdown, e-commerce took over the tasks of bricks-and-mortar retail. If you want to compete successfully against Amazon, eBay and the like in this highly competitive market, you have to ensure that your own services are available at all times and operate at a high level of performance.

The challenge

Minimizing downtime

Downtime due to cyberattacks is a massive threat to e-commerce websites - where attacks have a direct impact on sales, customer loyalty and trust. As an e-commerce platform, KiK must be available at all times to avoid potential loss of sales and retain customers. Continuous availability is a challenge, but necessary to satisfy customers and secure sales.

To solve this problem, KiK decided to secure its store with an application-level protection solution in 2021. Other target criteria for the online store were high-performance content delivery with low latency.

The solution

Uptime boost through certified protection solutions

To minimize downtime, KiK finally implemented Myra's certified protection solutions in 2021. In addition to DDoS protection, a web application firewall (WAF) and Myra's CDN were activated for dedicated protection of the online store.

The implementation of the protection services is simple and requires no additional hardware or software. There are basically two approaches for the technical connection: In the first step, either the customer's DNS entry is adapted for Layer 7 protection or the authoritative DNS server is transferred to Myra. The second step involves importing the relevant zones or setting up a CNAME entry, depending on the approach chosen. Finally, the Myra Network Operations Center (NOC) team of experts carries out the configuration and SSL termination to filter the traffic.

In consultation with KiK, Myra's IT security experts defined customized WAF rule sets that optimally map the individual requirements of the e-commerce company.

The result

Security-as-a-Service for DDoS defense

Thanks to the collaboration between KiK and Myra, the company's store system has a multi-layered protection system. The Security-as-a-Service solution automatically filters harmful requests from the incoming traffic and only forwards valid requests to KiK's servers.

To eliminate malicious access, manipulation and sabotage attempts, the Hyperscale WAF protects incoming and outgoing HTTP/S traffic. Meanwhile, the Myra CDN ensures stable high performance and fast delivery times even during unforeseen load peaks.
