NFON

Industry: IT Services

Employees: >500

With more than 50,000 customers, NFON is the leading European provider of cloud-based telephone systems. The company is active in 15 European countries and has more than 500 employees. Since the coronavirus pandemic at the latest, unified communication solutions from the cloud have become the tool of choice in many companies to connect customers, partners and employees - regardless of location.

The protection of such elementary digital services is crucial in order to safeguard the operational business of the connected companies against outages. This is why NFON has been protecting its VoIP services with Myra Security's Security-as-a-Service solutions since 2014.

the challenge

Precise identification of attacks despite technical hurdles

The protection of VoIP technologies against DDoS attacks is extremely complex due to the UDP traffic generated there. Conventional protection solutions cannot adequately qualify attacks here.

In the event of an attack, malicious traffic cannot be distinguished from regular requests. A suitable solution had to be found to overcome this technological hurdle.

The solution

Dynamic allowlisting for customized protection

Myra developed its own dynamic allowlisting solution with NFON to optimize the qualification of traffic. To implement this, NFON periodically records the IP addresses of registered end devices in an IP set and sends them to Myra for allowlisting.

In the event of an attack, only the signaling protocols and audio/video packets of the already registered clients are initially allowed through. The challenge of this solution is that tens of thousands of IP addresses have to be reliably recorded and managed every hour.

NFON secures its VoIP infrastructure from a technical perspective through cloud scrubbing (layer 3/4). In addition, the Myra Hyperscale WAF (Web Application Firewall) on layer 7 also protects legacy applications from cyberattacks. Myra Secure DNS is also used to secure the name resolution of NFON domains.
