The challenge

Protection against cyber attacks

Due to the growing cyber threat situation and the increasing danger of digital blackmail through DDoS attacks, Heinlein Hosting decided early on to implement preventive infrastructure protection systems.

Dedicated DDoS protection for the network and transport layers (layers 3 and 4) was to be implemented in order to reinforce the internal defensive measures already in place and to protect the data centers and the mailbox.org email service from attacks.

As Heinlein Hosting operates its services in Germany and avoids working with third-party service providers from non-EU countries for data protection reasons, the company was looking for a German DDoS protection provider. Other criteria included the required technical expertise and experience as well as full compliance with the GDPR.

The solution

Effective protection without additional hardware or software

Based on its own market analyses and recommendations from other providers, Heinlein Hosting opted for Myra Security. As Myra's protection system does not require any additional hardware or software on the customer side, it is independent of the existing infrastructure and can be implemented in a short space of time. The effort on the customer side is minimal, as almost the entire setup and configuration of the protection solution is carried out by Myra.

For the connection, Heinlein first created the RIPE route objects for its networks in accordance with Myra's specifications. The Myra Network Operations Center (NOC) team of experts then took care of the necessary network configuration. These adjustments subsequently made it possible, in the event of an attack, to use a “More Specific” annoncment to pull all traffic to the Myra scrubbing centers for cleaning. This means that only clean traffic reaches Heinlein's systems.

By using customized threshold values, such a switchover can also be carried out automatically within a few seconds using a flow appliance. In the case of Heinlein Hosting, traffic is forwarded with multiple redundancy both via a direct LAN connection to Myra at the Berlin BCIX and via various virtualized LAN connections.

The result

Blackmail DDoS attacks successfully fended off

With the help of the implemented Security-as-a-Service solution from Myra, Heinlein Hosting has successfully fended off several DDoS attacks since the start of the contract. For example, there was an extortionate DDoS attack on mailbox.org in mid-October 2021: The SYN flood attack on layer 3/4 lasted several hours and took place in two waves of up to 64 minutes with peak bandwidths of 291 GBit/s and 278 million packets per second, based on a total of almost 150,000 attacking IPs. Thanks to the upstream Myra filter system, the attack was successfully mitigated. The services remained “up & running” over the long duration of the attack.
